‘The Bombay Art Society (1888 – 2016): History and Voyage’, Exhibition and Book Release at NGMA, Mumbai on 10th February to 26th March 2017

The Bombay Art Society is putting up an epic exhibition, a sweeping retrospective of its 128 years old journey at the NGMA, Mumbai. Opening on the 10 th of February, this event is titled, ‘The Bombay Art Society (1888-2016): History and Voyage. This exhibition shall run till the 26th of March 2017.

This grand opus, curated by the noted painter, historian and scholar, Suhas Bahulkar, shall showcase the BAS’s glorious past through a galaxy of enthralling paintings and sculptures which won Gold Medals and Governor’s prizes in its last 124 exhibitions. The exhibition shall see the walls and floors of the NGMA adorned by works of legendary painters and sculptors like Ravi Varma, J.P.Ganguly, A.X.Trinidade, Ganpatrao Mhatre, S.L.Haldankar, V.P.Karmarkar, and modernists like Amrita Sher-Gil, K.K.Hebbar, K.H.Ara, S.H.Raza, Adi Davierwala, Mohan Samant, V.S.Gaitonde, to present day young talents.

This presentation shall also be accompanied by a book bearing the exhibition’s title, authored by the curator himself. The book records and investigates the glorious history of arguably the oldest art institution in India.

The exhibition will be inaugurated along with the book launch in the august presence of luminaries such as the eminent sculptor Shri.Sadashiv Sathe, art connoisseur and scholar, Dr.Pheroza Godrej, Director General of CSMVS, Shri Sabhyaschi Mukherjee and art historian & scholar, Prof.Deepak Kannal.

‘This momentous exhibition being a stepping stone for the further development of Indian Art, will certainly provide an insightful glimpse into its evolution so far.’, stated Shri.Vasudeo Kamath, President of the BAS. A schedule of outreach programmes through the course of the exhibition has been arranged at the NGMA, Mumbai, which shall include discussions, dialogues on various subjects concerning the wonderful history of BAS.
