South Asia’s largest and most important international festival of contemporary movement arts will be held from 03 to 12 February, 2017 in Bengaluru

The Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts is set to roll out the eighth edition of the Attakkalari India Biennial (AIB) from 03 to 12 February, 2017 in Bengaluru. Considered South Asia’s largest international contemporary dance and movement arts festival, the AIB 2017 will be held at five venues across the city —Ranga Shankara, Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Gurunanak Bhavan, Alliance Française de Bangalore, and Christ University. The theme of this edition is BLR MOVES and the festival will feature a host of performers and delegates from across the globe, encouraging the dance-enthusiastic public of the city, and the country, to join the celebration.

The AIB 2017 was announced in the midst of several celebrated individuals who graced the occasion with their presence at Alliance Française de Bangalore. Mr. Sudhakar Rao: Former Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka; Dr. N. Manjula: Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Karnataka; Smt. B. Jayashree: Theatre Personality and Member of Parliament; Dr. Claus Heimes: Director, Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Dr. Philippe Libersa: Director, Alliance Francaise de Bangalore; Hobin Park: Acclaimed Choreographer from Korea and Mentor at FACETS 2017 choreography residency; Andrés Morte: Co-Founder, Fabbrica Europa (Italy) and Mentor at FACETS 2017; and Jayachandran Palazhy: Artistic Director, Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts. Also present were other mentors at FACETS: Samar Grewal, Composer and Mentor of FACETS 2017 (India); Marcel Zaes, Composer and Mentor at FACETS 2017 (Switzerland); and Claude Parrat and Antoine Mozer, Light Designers and Mentors at FACETS 2017 (Switzerland).

Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts provides a national and international platform for the latest in contemporary dance and features renowned movement artists as well as emerging voices. The organisation aims to stimulate the growth of a vibrant performing arts scene in the country. The Centre also helps encourage, nurture, and mentor young talent in dance and movement arts. The 10-day dance festival will witness cutting-edge contemporary dance and digital performances from several countries, including the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, South Korea, Poland, South Africa, Finland, and India.

True to its theme, BLR MOVES, the Attakkalari India Biennial 2017 strives to animate Bengaluru’s cityscape with movement and digital arts, infusing new energy via the main performances of the festival and various lead-up and allied activities at different iconic venues across the city.

Highlighting the festival’s direction, Mr. Jayachandran Palazhy, Artistic Director of Attakkalari said, "Featuring the freshest voices in the contemporary dance scene in South Asia today along with some of the most innovative and acclaimed artists from across the globe, Attakkalari India Biennial 2017 is indeed a feast for the senses and offers something for everybody. In 2016, the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts also completed 15 glorious years in Bengaluru, undertaking many landmark projects that have helped propel the city’s contemporary dance scene as the most prominent and vibrant one in South Asia today. Since its inception in 2001, Attakkalari has made significant contributions towards developing the contemporary dance scene in India, particularly in the realm of dance pedagogy, choreography, performance, research, and stage technologies.”

Like its previous editions, the AIB 2017 is a forum for fresh ideas, knowledge, and expertise in dance, design, research, and discourse. Artists from various parts of the world come together to present their work, share their experiences, exchange ideas, explore new territories, and throw open a dynamic space for creative expression through performance, networking, and collaboration.
